Solutions to Harder Problem Sums Involving Fractions and Ratios

Solution to FracRatio1:

Sally spent 13 of her money on a dress and another 14 of her money on a bag. She had $134 left. How much did she spend on the dress?
To be able to compare the units for the dress and the bag, we need to make the denominators the same.
We find the LCM of 3 and 4, which is 12.
         13 = 412                           14  =  312
Since the total number of units is 12, number of units for the money left is 12u - 4u - 3u = 5u

5 units
à $340

1 unit à $340 ÷ 5 = $68
4 units à× $68 = $272

Solution to FracRatio2:

A class had an equal number of boys and girls at first. After 8 boys and 2 girls left the class,  the number of boys was  35 of the number of girls in the class. How many boys were in the class at first?
8 – 2  à 6
2 units à 6
1 unit à 6 ÷ 2 = 3
3 units à 3 × 3 = 9
9 + 8 = 17                      Ans: 17 boys
